I am a positive person

A Message to the Atlantic Evening Conservatory

I am a positive person is a play built for Zoom, my most recent collaboration with the Atlantic Acting School in 2020, under the direction of Will Detlefsen.

The project was a puzzle box: how can we make a play on Zoom? How can an actor reach across the screen and connect with the audience when you can’t see the audience, or see how many audience there are? How can we connect 18 actors who are all in boxes in a story that is engaging and doesn’t ignore the reality of the boxes?

I’m truly proud of the result. I think we tapped into something quite precinct. It might be the darkest play I’ve ever written - with a murder happening on screen, live-streamed home invasion, an older lady revealing herself to be in QAnon, a Zoom bombing, catphishing, and incest.

But that was the moment, Fall 2020.

Is it still?
