My work, my person, and my collaborations are rooted in excitement, curiosity, passion, love – enthusiasm in every sense of the word. In a deeper sense, “enthusiasm” once meant “full of God.” All of my work is ultimately a big spiritual question, a big “why.” They are conversations with that ineffable thing beyond the Word. I strive to be Seeking, and I seek out people who Seek.

It is my experience that every person has their own language and that it colors the dialogue they have with the world. I practice the intense study and respect of a person’s idiosyncratic language and the dance of our languages stumbling toward connection.

Though every person has their own language, it is my experience that there is an objective truth found outside us. Truth can only be found in accepting what is actually happening. I use it as a place to be inspired: I begin every collaboration by agreeing that the truth is the writing, which is now outside of me. Whenever possible, I work with actors so the characters sound like them. The truth is also the space, the theater, the heat, the budget, the sickness, the train, the traffic, the life. There is no escaping What Is.

I believe that connection is not really possible, but we must strive for it. I believe I will never fully understand someone, but I will listen. I believe I will never really know myself, but I will reflect on how my soul can get closer to my skin. I make time daily to be alone, and annually to be in retreat, every time coming back to you a little closer to me. I enter every creative process with this acceptance – not in defeat, but in celebration: of the unknowable truths in you, in me, and in the work we set out to do.
